Spring (Break) Cleaning

I’m on Spring Break this week, but I certainly haven’t forgotten about you: my beloved reader! Below is a list of cool links, stories, and videos I’ve accumulated over the past few months that I liked but didn’t really have much to say about. Consider it a tasting menu of entertainment + tech stories that I may or may not have posted from a beach.

How Caught Stealing Recreated 1998 NYC

Caught Stealing is a fun Darren Aronofsky thriller currently streaming on Netflix. I just watched it over the weekend and was surprised at an excellent movie it was; I think its trailers tried to sell it was a quirky comedy when it wasn’t really that at all.

Definition Magazine has a cool breakdown of how filmmaker Darren Aronofsky and DP Matthew Libatique shot the 1998-set film in 2025.

The Power of Silence

I’ve recommended StudioBinder videos before and I’ve got another one for you: Why Silence is Louder Than Sound in Film:

Great lessons here for anyone working with sound in their projects big or small!

Speaking of films that use sound effectively…

Everything Project Hail Mary Did Right

PHM is the year’s first blockbuster hit, and it’s no surprise why: I saw it over the weekend and much like Caught Stealing its wacky trailer belies its true nature, in this case a fun, optimistic, and emotional sci-fi movie. Hopefully Amazon-MGM takes my advice and allows it a long theatrical window. It certainly looks to be a big hit both theatrically and eventually on home entertainment.

Also click through to No Film School’s look at the challenging prospect of writing a script where the protagonist is alone for much of the film as well as a Verge interview with original PHM author Andy Weir. {Some SPOILERS for the movie in both articles}

It’s been a while since I’ve plugged our reader survey, but if you’re a regular reader of the newsletter and haven’t done so, please take our brief 4 question reader survey. To my shock and dismay, no one has requested additional information about my beloved Aunt Joan!
